The Location History feature of Google Maps landed the company in hot water in the past with privacy advocates citing concerns about what data is collected and what it retained by the company.

A couple of years back, Google responded to the controversy by making it easier to automatically delete the places visited and routes taken after a set period of time, or turn the admittedly helpful feature (rebranded as Timeline) off entirely.

Now Google is living-up to a vow to end support for the feature on the web completely and is advising customers to download their Timeline data to the Google Maps app on their device.

From today, Google is only saving Timeline information (for those who have it enabled) directly to the devices users are signed in on. Using multiple devices? You’ll have unique timelines for all devices, rather than one unified Timeline.

The company will take Timeline on the web offline on December 1, meaning those who don’t download the data to their device beforehand will lose the location history stored on the web older than 90 days.

In an email sent to customers today (published by Android Police), the company writes: “If you’d like to keep your saved visits and routes, choose your settings on your preferred smartphone by December 1, 2024. (You may first need to update the Google Maps app.) After you do this, you’ll only be able to use Timeline in the app. If you take no action, you may lose data.

“Google will try moving up to 90 days of Timeline data to the first signed-in device you use after December 1, 2024. Your older data will be deleted. Timeline will also remain on for your account, and your devices will continue saving new visits. Your visits and routes older than 3 months will be auto-deleted.”

If you switched your Location History / Timeline data off already, this is just a case of as you were. If you want to keep where you’ve been available, for posterity purposes, do as Google recommends above.

Apple users will not be forced to use OpenAI’s services in iOS 18, with a well-connected Apple reporter claiming the integration will be opt-in.

The company is expected to announce a partnership with the ChatGPT maker at WWDC on June 10. There, it’s expected to be confirmed that OpenAI will power some of the iPhone’s first steps into the generative AI era.

However, with large scale scepticism about the technology and the company that has thrust it into the mainstream, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is reporting Apple is conscious of scaring off loyal users who’ve placed their trust in Apple software.

According to the report, the scepticism also exists within Apple, with some executives concerned about a “rogue chatbot” damaging the company’s reputation. Gurman also reports some Apple employees have a “philosophical aversion” to having a third-party chatbot integrated within iOS.

Apple also understands that many customers will have the same aversions, which is why it’s making the service opt-in, today’s report says. pple believes giving users the option to opt-in to the features will insulate it from potential fall out, including privacy concerns.

Gurman writes: “Depending on how deeply Apple plans to integrate the chatbot with its software, it also could mean that OpenAI has access to personal information, which could unnerve some users. But Apple is expected to offer its new AI features as an opt-in service, according to the people familiar with the matter. So wary customers could easily steer clear of them if they’d prefer.”

In the end, the report says, Apple decided to proceed with the deal because it didn’t want to be seen as being left behind by rivals diving head first into AI. The report says Apple has decided to make the deal with the controversial company because its users would expect cutting edge features from a new iPhone.

In an ideal world, Apple would have its own large language models and a vastly upgraded version of Siri for this expansion. However, it’s not thought to be ready yet. Whether Apple is making the right decision by reportedly pressing ahead in an alliance that could undermine its repuation on multiple fronts remains to be seen.

Google is crowing about some Android phones potentially outstripping the iPhone in terms of length of support for operating systems and security updates.

A key Android executive has picked up on an Apple filing to UK regulators stating the minimum length of support for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which suggests Pixel and certain Samsung Galaxy phones will supported for longer.

The notice of compliance to the new Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) regulations promises a “minimum 5 years from the first supply date” of September 22 2023. That means Apple will support the iPhone 15 Pro Max (and most likely the other devices in the range) until September 2028.

The regulations define the support period is the “minimum length of time, expressed as a period of time with an end date, for which security updates will be provided.”

Google and Samsung are currently promising 7 years of operating system and security updates and the VP of Engineering for Android Security Dave Kleidermacher isn’t about to let it go unnoticed (via Android Authority).

“For years, iPhone was known as having a longer security support lifetime than Android. Yet Apple never actually committed to a minimum support lifetime at purchase,” he wrote on LinkedIn.

“Thanks to the UK government’s PSTI regulation (which I had the pleasure of supporting via multiple testimonies and IoT security standards work) Apple has finally published a purchase-time commitment – 5 years – two years LESS than Android flagships from Google (Pixel) and Samsung.”

“Apple deserves a lot of credit for providing 5+ years of security updates for a long time. But now it’s time to acknowledge iOS is no longer offering the best security lifetimes in the smartphone industry. Android is.”

Of course, Apple is only stating the mimimim number of years it plans to support the iPhone 15 Pro Max, but traditionally it has offered longer. The iPhone XR, for instance, was released on September 12 2018 and is currently approaching six full years of support. If Apple doesn’t cut it off this year when iOS 18 arrives, it’ll match the Pixel and Samsung pledge of 7 years.

Our reviewer’s first impressions are that the Sonos Ace “ticked off everything you’d consider important from a headphone in 2024. Comfort is good, the design (for the price) is well thought out, they sound good, the ANC appears to be strong, and the feature set covers what you’re want from a premium pair of headphones.”

OPINION: No quarter asked and no quarter given. Loewe is not messing about with its 2024 product launches, telling everyone that it’s not only back, but it’s here to stay.

So far Loewe has announced plans to manufacture its own OLED TVs: jumped into premium hi-fi with floorstanding and standmount speakers, signed Kylian Mbappé as a brand ambassador as well as launched Mbappé-themed We Hear Pro wireless speakers, and its most recent announcement was for its range of premium OLED TVs.

More announcements are in the offing but the crux of it is that Loewe is a resurgent brand after experiencing its share of economic turmoil in the not too distant past. It came close to bankruptcy in 2013 and then went bankrupt in 2019 before being rescued by investment from Skytec in 2020. The last ten years have been a struggle.

And when I went was invited to see Loewe’s upcoming products at an event in Berlin, I was split about what to take from the event. On the one hand there was a lot of ambition with Loewe pushing into new areas you wouldn’t associate it with – but on the other hand I felt concern. From its TV manufacturing plant, to new product areas, is it growing too fast too soon and spreading itself thin?

But Loewe had to do something different as what it was doing before didn’t rescue it from its eventual financial malaise. Diversification would make sense and associating itself with Kylian Mbappé, who has joined Real Madrid, which would link Loewe with a global brand that’s won its 15^th (fifteenth!) European Cup can only help its visibility, especially with younger, more affluent customers.

But though this iteration of Loewe carries the history of the 100-year old brand, it is also in essence, a new company. I’d assume it’d need to rebuild or at least think different about how it distributes its products and which dealers can help it best because it not only has to be built up again but be better than before.

That won’t be easy, especially as Loewe positions itself as a premium brand. Just look at pricing for its 32-inch HD HDR TV (available in Currys UK) which is more expensive than a 48-inch LG C3 OLED TV. Value is not what Loewe is going or its strongest suit.

But it’s also worth remembering that its direct competitors aren’t the likes of LG, Samsung, and Sony but Bang & Olufsen. It means a smaller, more premium market to cater to but one impacted by Loewe chiefly being visible in Europe and not worldwide.

Wherever I’ve travelled I’ve seen Bang & Olufsen stores but the Loewe stores I’ve seen are the boutique fashion house. You’d imagine if this version of Loewe is to be a success it has cast it net far and wide in search for new customers.

Its current tactics will help re-establish the brand and show it is more than just an AV brand but Europe also feels a little lacking in premium ‘tech’ brands that can strut their stuff at the higher end of the market. It needs a success story, a powerhouse that combines aesthetics and high performance in a uniquely European way.

Loewe are going full send with their new products, and here’s hoping they can succeed where previously they stumbled.

Shazam is an app that prevents you from needing to frantically Google the lyrics or ask someone around you when you’re dying to know the name of a track. Keep reading to learn more about the app. 

What is Shazam? 

Shazam is a mobile app designed to recognise the music playing around you. Originally developed by UK-based company Shazam Entertainment, Shazam was acquired by Apple in 2018. 

To use the app, all you need to do is tap your screen. Shazam listens to the music behind you in real life or playing via TikTok, Instagram or YouTube. It then tells you the name of the song playing, the artist, and how many times that particular song has been Shazam-ed. 

From there, you can play the song, watch videos, read lyrics, and view information about live shows. 

This is a far cry from the original Shazam which was founded more than 20 years ago. Back then, users would need to dial 2580 and hold their phone up to the sound playing. The service would then send that person an SMS detailing the track name and artist.

Thankfully, nowadays you can find Shazam in both the Android and iOS app stores with support for a wide range of devices including smartphones and smartwatches. There’s also a MacOS desktop app and a Chrome browser extension. 

For a long time, Shazam could also be found built into Snapchat as a Scan feature. However, Snapchat recently announced that this feature would no longer be available with the company explaining that it would be “bringing more focus to other Snapchat products” instead. 

How does it work? 

Shazam works by listening to a song with your device’s built-in mic and creating a digital fingerprint based on what it can hear. That fingerprint is then compared with the millions of tracks in Shazam’s database to find a perfect match. 

This entire process happens in a matter of seconds, making Shazam an incredibly fast and convenient way to identify unknown songs.

The Hybrid Pro is made up of a whopping seven layers including the Simbatex foam layer which is infused with graphite and has an open-cell design to increase airflow to prevent overheating, and two layers of Aero Coil springs to support your body. 

There’s also a harder edge support layer around the bed and multi zone foam base for extra depth and support. 

The layers are topped off with wool which aids the mattress against heat build-up, which is a common issue with memory foam mattresses. 

Overall we found the Simba Hybrid Pro to be a firm mattress that offers excellent support and comfort. We determined this by measuring how far we sank into the mattress in various sitting and sleeping positions. 

We found the Hybrid Pro was able to insulate movement well, much better than pocket-sprung mattresses, which means a restless partner won’t interrupt your own circadian rhythm. 

Although the Simba Hybrid Pro is an expensive mattress, it offers unparalleled support and excellent heat dissipation to help you get the best night’s sleep possible. If you prefer a softer mattress then we’d recommend the Nectar Sleep Premier instead.

Emma Original Mattress

A straightforward foam mattress, the Emma Original balances price, comfort and features neatly. One of the best things about this mattress is that its cover is washable.

Unzip the top, and it lifts off, ready to go in the washing machine, leaving the foam layers where they are. You can also remove the lower cover and wash that, although that’s a little trickier. We recommend flipping the mattress and removing the section that way.

The top cover is Emma’s UltraDry, which is moisture-wicking, removing sweat from your body. Inside are three foam layers: Airogell to regulate temperature, the memory foam layer which adapts to your body and offers support, and finally HRX Supreme Foam to give stability and support.

It generally works well, providing great levels of support when lying down. Edge support is decent, but the mattress did sink a little when we were sitting up (6cm), so those who read a lot or watch TV in bed may prefer a slightly harder pick.

Motion transference is minimal, with one person’s movements staying on their side of the bed. Heat dissipation is good, with most heat gone after three minutes and the bed returning to ambient temperatures a couple of minutes after that.

Overall, this is a great midrange mattress that’s easy to keep clean. If you want something with a more luxurious feel or a mattress that’s a bit firmer, check out the alternatives.

Nectar Sleep Premier

The Nectar Sleep Premier is the company’s top-of-the-range mattress-in-a-box, as you can probably tell by the relatively high price. A full 365-day trial period does mean that you get a long time to give it a go.

As with most premium mattresses, the Nectar Sleep Premier is chunky. Its 28cm depth means that you’ll want deep fitted sheets to go over it, and may need a hand getting it into position; fortunately, there are big handles on the side for this job.

There are six layers. On the outside is the quilted cooling cover, which feels nice and soft to the touch. There’s a zip, but the cover is not removable or machine washable. Next is the dynamic support layer, which is made of breathable foam; press-relieving memory foam is next; there’s a honeycomb layer built for spine alignment; and, finally, there’s the base material that keeps everything in place.

Edge support isn’t so good on this model, with the bed dipping 7.5cm with us sat on the side. Once in bed, things get better. There’s only a 4.5cm dip when sat up in bed, and support is excellent in all sleeping positions. That’s even though the mattress feels a bit softer to the touch than some rivals.

Movement isolation is very good. Even if you sleep with someone who’s quite restless, you shouldn’t be disturbed too much.

Heat dissipation is excellent, taking just three minutes for our outline to practically disappear in our thermal camera test.

If you like a softer-feel mattress, but one that still gives good support, then this premium example is a good choice.

The Emma Premium Mattress should suit anyone who wants a high-quality yet firm mattress. Firm shouldn’t be mistaken for uncomfortable, as this mattress provides a high level of support. Once we’d gotten used to it, we found it to be extremely comfortable to sleep on.

As with many premium mattresses, this one is very deep once it’s unwrapped and expanded to its full size. It’s likely you’ll need help unpacking this model. Help will also be needed when you turn this mattress regularly to prevent sagging.

There are six layers in this mattress. At the top is the breathable cover that gives comfort and acts a little like a mattress topper. This layer also helps regulate temperature and can be removed for washing.

Next is the Point Elastic Airgocell, which helps regulate temperature by absorbing and evaporating sweat. Then, there’s a memory foam layer that moulds to your body shape, followed by a foam layer that Emma says helps alleviate pressure. As this is a hybrid mattress, there’s a layer of springs, followed by a base foam layer.

We found that this mattress took a while to get used to, and we found it very firm at first. If you prefer a mattress with a softer feel, look elsewhere.

Edge support is excellent on this bed, with the mattress dipping just 4.5cm. There’s little dip from lying in sleeping positions either (enough to keep your spine aligned), but the mattress remains very firm.

Measuring the mattress with an accelerometer, we found that motion was quite well insulated, with little disturbance caused by one partner turning over. Getting out of bed proved even better: you probably wouldn’t even notice a partner waking up the morning.

Heat dissipation is very good. After three minutes, there was little trace of where we had been lying. This is a great mattress, but it’s better for those who like a firm-feel.

The Nectar Hybrid Mattress is a great-value hybrid mattress which is currently available for 60% less than its original price. As with most rivals, this mattress comes vacuum-packed and must be left to inflate back to full size before you can sleep on it.

Six layers are used to build up the Nectar Hybrid Mattress. First, there’s a quilted cooling cover, which can’t be removed, even though there’s a zip around the outside. It’s worth buying a mattress protector to use with it.

There’s a dynamic support layer, micro-spring layer, pressure-relieving memory foam, 7-zone supportive base and positioning base material.

Rated as a six on a firmness scale (out of 10), this mattress is about in the middle. We sat on the edge of this mattress, and it dipped 8cm, which is quite a lot. If you tend to sleep at the edge of the bed, then a firmer mattress would be better. Likewise, if you sit up and read in bed a lot, then another mattress may be better: this model dipped 6cm.

For sleep, the Nectar Hybrid Mattress is very good. It conforms to your body shape, keeping you and your spine well aligned, proving to be very comfortable.

Measuring motion isolation, we found that quite a lot of motion was transmitted from one side of the bed to another when getting in and out; the relatively soft edges are likely to blame. Once in bed, the Nectar Hybrid Mattress isolates one person from their partner’s movements.

Heat dissipation is good but not the best that we’ve seen: it took five minutes before our routine was hard to see in thermal camera photos.

This is a good mid-range choice for anyone who wants a medium-firm mattress.

The final dimensions of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max have appeared online in a leak, and they suggest an increase in size and weight across the board.

We’ve heard from previous reports that the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro are set to have bigger screens than before, but that the bezels will be smaller than ever. This has led us to wonder just how big (and heavy) these new premium phones will be.

We may have just received our answer. According to a leak from established tipster Ice Universe (via MacRumors), the iPhone 16 Pro Max will measure 163 × 77.58mm × 8.26mm, with a 6.9-inch display and 1.15mm bezels. It’ll weigh 225g.

The iPhone 16 Pro, meanwhile, will measure 149.6 x 71.45 x 8.25mm, with a 6.3-inch display and 1.2mm bezels. Apple’s smaller Pro phone will weigh 194g.

According to the original X (formerly Twitter) post, “The iPhone 16 Pro Max will be the world’s closest smartphone to a borderless sci-fi form factor”.

While those bezels are indeed smaller than their predecessors for both phones, however, it won’t be enough to completely offset the increased screen size (up from 6.7 and 6.1 inches respectively). Both phones will be fractionally bigger and a few grams heavier than their predecessors.

The Meta Quest 3 is the go-to VR headset for those on the market in 2024, offering a high-end experience with high-res lenses, a powerful processor and advanced mixed reality capabilities, all for less than £500/$500 – but that’s still a little pricy for those yet to try VR.

That’s why Meta is rumoured to be working on a cheaper version of the Quest 3 to replace the outgoing Quest 2, unofficially dubbed the Quest 3S. Despite its rumoured budget focus, the headset is rumoured to offer similar levels of processing power to the Quest 3, although it might do away with bundled controllers to hit such a tempting price point.

With all that in mind, here’s everything we know so far about the Meta Quest 3S, previously dubbed the Meta Quest 3 Lite, from release date and pricing speculation to the latest leaks and rumours about the budget-friendly VR headset. 

Meta Quest 3S or Meta Quest 3 Lite?

While most early rumours surrounding Meta’s new budget-friendly VR headset suggested that it’d be called Meta Quest 3 Lite, more recent rumours suggest it’ll likely be dubbed the Meta Quest 3S.

The first evidence of the official branding came via Reddit back in March, when an alleged screenshot of a Meta User Research Zoom meeting seemed to show both the Quest 3 and the yet-unannounced Quest 3S.

While that would’ve been relatively easy to spoof, the second appearance of the branding is a little harder to ignore. That’s because the Meta Quest 3S branding appeared once again, this time on the Meta Store. Yes, that’s right, Meta’s own app storefront.

According to The Verge, for a limited time in early June 2024, users were seeing the Quest 3S listed alongside the Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest Pro and Meta Quest 2 as supported devices in app listings. All mention has since been scrubbed from the storefront, but it seems the cat is out of the bag.

This all but confirms that the budget-friendly Quest will be called the Meta Quest 3S and not the Quest 3 Lite as initially claimed.

When will the Meta Quest 3S be released?

The Verge published details of a leaked internal meeting at Meta in 2023 in which Vice President for VR, Mark Rabkin, claimed that a more “accessible” headset would make an appearance in 2024. “The goal for this headset is very simple: pack the biggest punch we can at the most attractive price point in the VR consumer market.”

The leak didn’t get any more specific than that as to when in 2024 it should make its debut, but Meta has a fairly tried-and-tested method for launching its VR hardware. It all focuses on Meta Connect, the company’s yearly VR-focused showcase that tends to take place in October. 

It’s a place for Meta to not only showcase new consumer hardware but tease future concepts and tech advancements like AR glasses, which are also rumoured to make an appearance at this year’s Meta Connect sometime in October 2024.

Given that Meta has used Connect to launch not only the Quest 3 and Quest Pro but also the Quest 2 and even the OG Quest, it’s safe to assume that Meta will use this year’s show to reveal the Quest 3S, so expect an October 2024 reveal and release a few weeks later. 

If, however, we hear anything differently, we’ll be sure to update this section.

How much will the Meta Quest 3S cost?

This is probably the big question surrounding the Meta Quest 3S. As the name suggests, the headset is intended to be a less feature-packed variant of the Quest 3 to save on price. Given that the Quest 2 currently retails for just £299/$299, it’s safe to say that Meta will want to go cheap on this headset.

It’s likely that it’ll try to match the £299/$299 price tag of the Quest 2 or get as close to it as possible to tempt consumers away from the now-aging Quest 2 headset as the go-to budget option. 

If it gets much higher, say closer to the £400/$400 price point, it’ll be a much harder sell considering the full-fat Quest 3 is available for £479/$499, and it gets even cheaper during sale seasons like Black Friday.

That said, there aren’t any specific rumours about Meta Quest 3S pricing just yet, so we’ll be sure to update this section once rumours and leaks begin to surface.  

Latest Meta Quest 3S leaks and rumours

Meta might not be ready to reveal the Meta Quest 3S just yet, but that hasn’t stopped the budget-friendly VR headset from becoming the focus of leaks and online rumours these past few months. 

While rumours of this kind are always worth taking with a pinch of salt as they’re exceedingly hard to verify, they do provide some insight into what we could potentially expect from the Quest 3S when it does eventually make an appearance. 

Let’s start with claims from a Chinese analyst who has been on the money with previous VR-related predictions. According to them, the Quest 3S will be a combination of the Quest 2 and Quest 3, sporting the same Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset as the Quest 3 but with older Fresnel lenses in place of the slimmer, higher-quality pancake lenses of the newer headset. 

The analyst also claims it’ll sport a black-and-white passthrough like the Quest 2 to facilitate basic mixed reality capabilities, leaving the colour passthrough exclusive to the premium Quest 3 headset.

That aligns nicely with comments from the ever-accurate Mark Gurman who recently claimed that the Quest 3S “looks a lot like the Quest 3 but uses less costly components” while also describing it as a “mixed reality headset”, suggesting the use of some kind of passthrough system.

That approach was backed up by an alleged screenshot of a Meta User Research Zoom meeting that seems to show a headset with front-facing cameras, presumably both for tracking and passthrough capabilities. It also introduced us to the Meta Quest 3S branding for the first time before prematurely appearing on the Meta Store in early June 2024.

Both Gurman and the Chinese analyst agree that Meta is considering not including Quest controllers in the box to hit the lower price point. This might sound absurd at a glance, but given that Meta has significantly improved hand tracking since it was first introduced in beta form with the original Quest back in 2019, it makes sense. 

There are also a bunch of apps that support hand tracking as well as controller input, though it’s far from universal, so those who want the top VR experience will still need to invest in controllers separately. But, for those more interested in AR and using their hands to interact, this could potentially work as a great way to save some cash. 

While that sounds like it’s all but set in stone, Twitter leaker @ZGFTECH shared renders of the alleged Quest 3S, which throws a spanner in the works. 

If true, the leaked headset render looks like a blend of the Quest 2 and Quest 3, sporting a similar design to the Quest 2 albeit with the same white plastic finish of the newer model. That backs up the claims of the use of Fresnel lenses, as they take up more space than the Pancake lenses of the Quest 3.

However, the eagle-eyed among you might notice there’s one key difference when compared to the Quest 3 – the lack of passthrough cameras. That goes directly in the face of claims that the headset will indeed be a mixed-reality device despite its cheaper focus.

Will Meta opt for a headset without mixed reality just months after a blog post from Meta’s Reality Labs Director of Engineering for XR Tech claiming that he’s “convinced that Passthrough and MR will be a standard feature on all future headsets”? It seems unlikely given that corporate blogs usually align with internal company goals, but we’ll have to wait and see for now.

And that really is what the iPhone 15 Pro Max is. We awarded it 4.5 out of 5 in our review, calling it “an exceptional smartphone” that “does a lot and puts a lot of pressure on Samsung, Oppo and Xiaomi to make vast upgrades over the next 12 months”.

It addresses a lot of the issues we’ve had with previous Max models. It has a new titanium frame that drastically reduces the weight, with a rounded design for a more comfortable hand feel. Apple has also finally added a USB-C port to the equation.

Besides those little tweaks, the iPhone 15 Pro Max does all the big stuff phenomenally well. Its 6.7-inch screen is big, bright, fast and accurate, while its A17 Pro chip is one of the fastest in the business.

Camera performance, meanwhile, is absolutely impeccable. New to this year’s model (and unique among the iPhone 15 range) is a 5x telephoto camera, which will capture you some stunning zoomed shots.

We gave the CMF Watch Pro a hugely positive 4-star review near the beginning of the year, finding it to be “a debut smartwatch that impresses both on the UI and design front”.

It design genuinely doesn’t reflect its budget price tag, while the UI is refreshingly different to anything else on the market. This is a superbly designed bit of kit all round.

That 1.96-inch AMOLED display is a thing of beauty too, with a 410 x 502 resolution and a maximum brightness of 600+ nits. It makes a lot of more expensive smartwatches look a little silly.

Although rechargeable batteries may be more of a popular option, as they offer better value over their lifespan and are better for the environment, a disposableset of alkaline AA or AAA batteries is incredibly convenient. Unlike rechargeable batteries, disposable batteries don’t lose charge while not in use, making them dependable in an unexpected emergency.

When choosing a disposable battery, you want to make sure that you’re getting the best possible model, with the longest lifespan and most power available. This is where we come in.

We test all batteries thoroughly, first by measuring their total capacity via a dedicated battery tester. We then consider and measure the use-cases a battery may be put through. For example if the battery is put through a high drain for devices that use a lot of power quickly, or a low drain for devices that use smaller amounts of power. 

We also consider the price of batteries and whether the price is reasonable for what you get in return.

The GP Ultra AA are a fantastic choice for most households as they offer great value for money, are available in a wide-range of pack sizes and are designed for all types of use. Although we’ve reviewed batteries that boasted higher capacities, the overall flexibility and price of the GP Ultra AA easily make them our most recommended choice.

GP states that the Ultra AA batteries have a service life of 19.5 hours based on a 10-Ohm discharge resistance, which essentially means they are designed for power-hungry devices such as remote-controlled toys and torches. 

To trial this ourselves we used an Ansmann Energy XC 3000 to drain the batteries to determine how long they take to consume power. We concluded that this resulted in one of the highest initial capacities we had seen across all our battery tests, with the batteries ending at 0.94V.

We then left the batteries to cool down and re-ran our test to check if there was any charge remaining. Impressively, the Ultra AA boasted the highest result of any alkaline batteries we’ve reviewed, as the total capacity was an average of 1680.5mAh.

Essentially this shows that the GP Ultra AA are not only optimum for high-drain applications but also low-drain devices such as remote controls and radios, and can keep them powered for a good amount of time.

As the GP Ultra AA batteries are versatile, can support both high and low drain capacities and has a generous RRP across all pack sizes, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better value set.

When we tested AAA batteries, we were expecting a similar spread of results to the AA models, but we were wrong: the Amazon Basics Alkaline AAA batteries were by far the best at everything in our tests.

We performed an initial drain test and found that the batteries held 559.75mAh, which was highest by a lot. Running a second drain test after the batteries had cooled down, we found that they held an additional 25.25mAh, for a total of 585mAh. That’s second overall, but only 12mAh less than the GP Ultra AAA batteries.

That shows that pretty much the full capacity can be used by high drain devices, such as games controllers, toys and torches. Yet, the overall capacity is high, making these batteries suitable for low-drain uses, such as remote controls, where longevity is important.

The other batteries that we tested just weren’t as good: they had much lower results in the initial result, and most had lower overall capacities. That makes the Amazon Basics Alkaline AAA batteries the best overall at everything.

The word ‘budget’ often has bad connotations, but the Amazon Basics Alkaline AA batteries avoid that trap. While these are undoubtedly cheap batteries, particular when bought in bulk.

Running these batteries through our normal tests, we measured them with an initial capacity of 1376mAh, which is only slightly behind the Duracell Plus AA. This amount of power shows that these batteries are an excellent choice for high-drain uses, such as torches and toys.

We then ran the batteries through a second drain test, which delivered an additional 219mAh, for a total capacity of 1595mAh, which is only just behind the GP Ultra AA batteries. That makes these batteries a good choice for lower-drain use, such as clocks and remote controls.

While the GP Ultra batteries may be slightly more flexible, if you’re on a tighter budget, these are a great choice, particularly if you want to buy in bulk.

Duracell Plus AA

The best high-power AA batteries

If it’s raw power that you want, then the Duracell Plus AA alkaline batteries are for you. These proved to be real power-houses in our tests.

Our initial drain test showed that these batteries were capable of delivering 1442mAh: this is the highest that we’ve seen. We then performed a second test after the batteries had cooled down, and they delivered an additional 176mAh, giving a total of 1618mAh.

While this makes the GP Ultra AA batteries more powerful overall, the Duracell AA’s initial result shows that these batteries are much more powerful for high-drain use, such as toys and torches. If that’s the main use that you want batteries for, then there’s nothing better that we’ve tested.

These batteries are quite expensive, and the Amazon Basics AA may be better choice if you’re on a tighter budget.

Our pick for the best Google phone is the top-end Pixel 8 Pro. This is very much of a rival to devices like the Galaxy S23 Plus, offering a slicker software experience and one of the best cameras around, though its increased price tag means it’s not quite as budget-friendly as its predecessor.

All the phones featured here boast smooth, clean and frequently updated software. As Google makes both the phone and the underlying Android software, Pixel phones get updates as soon as Android releases them, so you’ll get Android 14 out of the box. That’s cool enough, but Google’s commitment to 7 years of OS upgrades with the Pixel 8 range – the best of any Android manufacturer – will see it through to the release of Android 21, with all new features included.

More specifically, there are a few reasons to go for the Pixel 8 Pro over the cheaper options in our list. First off, the 6.7-inch 120Hz LPTO Actua display is both smooth and impressively bright at 2400nits, making it larger and smarter than the Pixel 8, while boasting a serious upgrade in resolution and brightness compared to the Pixel 7a. It’s also a flat display this time around, which makes for a nice change from the curved displays of previous models.

There’s also a slightly updated design with a matte rear that, compared to the Pixel 8’s glossy finish, is much better at resisting smudges and fingerprints while also being a little grippier.

It’s also the only version of the Pixel 8 with a triple camera array. Both the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro have excellent main and ultrawide cameras, but with the Pro, you’re also getting a 48MP telephoto zoom. It’s not the very best telephoto zoom we’ve used, but it’s the best on the list, including the high-end Pixel Fold.

Right in the middle of Google’s smartphone range, you’ll find the Pixel 8. This device might not offer quite the same specs as the Pro version (most notably lacking a telephoto sensor and having a slightly smaller, non-LTPO screen), but it still packs quite the punch, especially given its relatively modest price tag – even if, like the Pro, it’s more expensive than the Pixel 7.

The camera, like with other Pixel phones, is the main highlight here, delivering gorgeously detailed and punchy images regardless of whether you’re using it during the day or at night. There are also fun AI smarts that allow you to swap out faces in group selfies for better options and even use generative AI to remove huge swathes of an image, but it’s not the only reason you might feel tempted to make one of these your own.

The 120Hz OLED Actua screen, measuring a slightly smaller 6.2 inches than its predecessor, is plenty capable with impressive peak brightness and great HDR support that makes watching Netflix movies a joy, and the design certainly looks sleek and feels premium to the touch as well. It’s just a shame that it doesn’t have the same matte finish as the Pixel 8 Pro, as it’s quite the fingerprint magnet.

It also gets the same long-term commitment as the Pixel 8 Pro, boasting 7 years of OS upgrades that’ll take it through to the release of Android 21, all new features in tow.

While the slow charging speeds and lack of a telephoto sensor are two obvious compromises, we certainly don’t think that these should be dealbreakers when a smartphone offers as good overall performance as the Pixel 8 does.

Google Pixel 8a

The best affordable Pixel phone

If you’re on the hunt for a small Pixel but want to keep the budget low, the Pixel 8a is a great pick. In many of the most important ways, it matches the (more expensive) Pixel 8 and offers a number of upgrades over last year’s equally tempting Pixel 7a.

New features include another boost to the 6.1-inch OLED screen’s refresh rate, now up to 120Hz to match most of the competition, and it borrows the flagship Pixel 8‘s Actua screen tech for a serious boost in brightness, up to 2000nits max. It makes scrolling through Instagram and doom scrolling on TikTok that little bit better, even if the bezels are egregiously thick.

It also sports the same matte finish as the top-end Pixel 8 Pro, rather than the glossy finish of the Pixel 8, which both makes it less of a fingerprint magnet and gives it a nice satin-esque feel in the hand. Combined with more rounded edges and a thinner camera bar on the rear, it’s a well-built smartphone.

Of course, the headline feature of any Pixel phone is camera tech, and that’s also true of the Pixel 8a. It might not offer any big hardware upgrades, sporting the same combination of a 64MP main sensor and 13MP ultrawide as the Pixel 7a, but it continues to deliver impressive mobile photography with accurate skin tones, exceptional low-light performance and plenty of detail to boot.

Inside the phone, there’s the same Tensor G3 chip as the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. While we would like a little more power in the flagship range, at this price it is perfectly adequate and a good performer in all of our tests. Tensor also powers many of the AI aspects of the Pixel, like the clever call screening features and excellent voice recorder.

Just as with the Pixel 7a, however, the battery life could be better. Our reviewer managed to get through every day without reaching for a charger, but only just. He noted that battery drain was significant, especially with the screen brightness cranked up, with a maximum of around four and a half hours of screen time to completely drain the phone.

Google Pixel Fold

At the other end of the spectrum, you’ll find the ultra-premium Google Pixel Fold, the only Pixel available in a foldable form factor. It’s extremely expensive at £1,749/$1,799, but if you want the Pixel software experience on a foldable, it’s your only option right now.

The book-style foldable is squatter than what you’ll find from the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Honor Magic Vs, making the external 5.8-inch OLED panel much more compact and easier to use. It also means the internal 7.6-inch OLED display boasts a horizontal aspect ratio, compared to most other foldables that are taller than they are wider. Both displays are set to a super smooth 120Hz refresh rate, with the inner display boasting a crisp 2K resolution.

You’ll find camera hardware including a main 48Mp snapper, a 10.8MP ultrawide and 18.8MP 5x telephoto lens capable of delivering the famed Pixel experience, with vibrant, impressively detailed shots and access to AI-powered features like Night Sight and Super Res Zoom.

That AI experience also spills over into the general Android 13 experience on offer, with AI-infused Pixel-favourite features like the ability to screen incoming calls on your behalf all present and accounted for.

There are hints that this is very much a first-gen product, however; the crease on the inner panel is both wider and deeper than what you’ll find from most other competitors in 2024, and the hinge doesn’t completely open 180 degrees, leaving the phone to wobble on flat surfaces.

Google has also removed the ability to force unsupported apps to run in full-screen mode on the internal display – a feature of every other book-style foldable – severely limiting just how helpful it can be when general app support is hit-and-miss.

And, as with practically every other Pixel phone, the 4821mAh battery isn’t quite enough to negate that battery anxiety. It’d get to the end of the day – just about – but couldn’t survive into the second day. It also suffers from a rather slow 30W charging experience, though this isn’t that out of place in the foldable market.

If, however, you’ve got your heart set on a book-style foldable and simply have to have the stock Pixel experience, the Pixel Fold ticks most boxes.

It’s a great price for a phone with some seriously impressive specs, including a 6.78-inch 1.5K 120Hz display, 256GB of storage, a 108MP main camera, a huge 5,300mAh battery, and impressive five-star drop resistance certification.

We gave the Magic 6 Lite a positive 4 out of 5 review, calling it “An attractive budget-focused smartphone with stellar battery life and a top-notch display”.

Said display outputs at a higher resolution than most other affordable phones. It’s also just a very bright, colourful screen in its own right, with 1920Hz PWM reducing the flicker that can fatigue your eyes.

Its design really is very nice for a phone of this price – and we say that with the RRP in mind. At this discounted price, it’s an absolute stunner. This thing looks and feels great, but disappears into your pocket when not in use.

Google’s high-profile Gemini AI assistant app is finally available in the UK and Europe.

While Google claimed that it rolled out its new Gemini AI app assistant globally back in early May, it omitted the whole of Europe in that equation (unless you went through third party app stores). Now the Gemini AI app has started rolling out across the continent.

Having checked from my UK location, I can confirm that it’s available to download for free now on the Google Play Store for Android. You should also find that you can activate it from a Google Assistant pop up.

Indeed, upon opening the Google Gemini app up for the first time on supported phones, it’ll offer to take over the usual role of Google Assistant in managing all your usual tasks, and will respond to your usual ‘Hey Google’ prompt or physical input. You can still switch between the two assistants in the Settings menu.

As for iPhone users, they’ll be able to access Gemini from a new tab in the Google app some time over the coming weeks.

If you missed the announcement earlier in the year, Google Gemini is the new name for Google’s Bard AI chatbot, and is so named for the large language model (LLM) that powers it.

Within this context, Gemini is Google’s answer to ChatGPT, OpenAI’s pioneering AI chatbot. It’s a multimodal AI tool, which means that you can ask it a question or set it a task using natural language, code, or visual media, and it’ll come up with an often scarily incisive response, all delivered in a conversational manner.

While much of the recent Galaxy Watch speculation has centred on Samsung potentially launching a premium Apple Watch Ultra rival, it appears the company might be preparing to sneak an Apple Watch SE contender in on us too.

New purported renders posted on Twitter claim to show the design for a potential Galaxy Watch FE. The supposed leak comes little more than a month before Samsung’s next Unpacked event.

The renders, published to the social media platform by Sudhanshu Ambhore (@Sudhanshu1414) on Tuesday, show a trio of colour options which look like black, silver and rose gold.

The images are also accompanied by some purported specs from the wouldbe leaker who speaks of a 1.2-inch AMOLED display with a 396 x 396 resolution, and a device powered by an Exynos W920 dual core chip (1.18GHz) with 1.5GB of RAM.

That’s the same chip that appears on the Galaxy Watch 4 and, judging by the design and massive bezels, it could be Samsung is revamping and perhaps rebranding 2021’s Galaxy Watch 4 as a Galaxy Watch FE.

According to the leaker it will have Wear OS accompanied by the Samsung One UI Watch 5, which arrived last year on the Galaxy Watch 6.

The leaker claims there’ll be a 247mAh battery that’ll last for up to 30 hours, while he also reckons there’ll be 50m of water resistance from the 5 ATM and IP68 certifications. He also reckons there’s also dual-band Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth 5.0, and NFC on board.

It appears somewhat unlikely Samsung would look to debut this watch alongside its Galaxy Watch 7 range at the rumoured Unpacked event in July. Such a device would look decidedly old hat alongside the latest and greatest watches, especially if there was a Galaxy Watch Ultra involved.

Maybe Samsung could debut a Watch FE alongside the inevitable Galaxy S24 FE likely to go on sale at the end of the year. The Watch FE would be an entry level watch that may even retail for around the £100-£150 mark. Stay tuned.

Our reviewer loves this model and praised the expansive Dolby Atmos presentation thanks to the upfiring speakers, as well as the clear, detailed and balanced audio. It also offers the Quick Tune TruePlay which enables the speaker to quickly analyse the dimensions of the room to provide the best soundscape for the environment.

We gave it a 4.5 score from a possible five in a detailed test and loved how it could be used for individual music playback and as part of a Sonos home cinema system. It also adds Bluetooth, which is a welcome bonus, as well as the ability to cast tunes via standard Wi-Fi or Apple’s AirPlay technology.

It also has a super interesting, hourglass-like concave design that’s ideal for users who’re looking for a more unique look inside the home.

Computex is well underway in Taipei and Intel took centre stage on Tuesday to unveil its Lunar Lake generation of chips that’ll ship within PCs beginning this autumn.

The new x86-based chipset is designed for use within the new range of Microsoft Copilot+ AI Windows PCs and promises big gains in neuro processing, graphical performance and potential battery life.

Intel’s new chips will go head-to-head with the AMD Ryzen AI 300 chips and Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus set-ups.

The headline appears to be the 48 TOPS (tera ops per second) from a brand new neural processing unit, which is a significant increase on the 10 TOPS NPU provided by the current generation Meteor Lake Core Ultra (15th Gen) chips. Essentially, it more than quadruples the AI acceleration potential.

In terms of brute force, Intel reckons chips at the same clock speed include 14% faster CPU performance, 50% improved graphics performance, and battery life that can last up to 60% longer than Meteor Lake models from last year.

Intel says: “New Performance-cores (P-cores) and Efficient-cores (E-cores) deliver amazing performance at up to 40% lower system-on-chip power compared to the previous generation. A new neural processing unit is up to 4x faster, enabling corresponding improvements in generative AI, versus the previous generation. And new Xe2 graphics processing unit cores improve gaming and graphics performance by 1.5x over the previous generation.”

Intel also says its new Lunar Lake line-up will include on board memory, rather than separate RAM chips. The chips will include 16GB or 32GB of LPDDR5X RAM and should boast some serious efficiency gains, thanks to the system-on-a-chip design. Specifically, it’ll mean 40% lower power consumption in some areas.

Efficiency is also boosted by what Intel is calling an “advanced low power island”, which will take care of the system’s less power hungry tasks. Supported connectivity standards include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, PCIe Gen5 and Thunderbolt 4.

Intel says the advanced low-power island is “a novel compute cluster and Intel innovation that handles background and productivity tasks with extreme efficiency, enabling amazing laptop battery life.”

Intel says the chips will begin appearing in laptops later this year including more than 80 models from 20 different manufacturers. We’ll have further analysis of the Intel Lunar Lake line-up in due course.

On a separate Netflix support page, the company warns users: “Netflix will no longer be available on Apple TV (2nd generation) and Apple TV (3rd generation) after July 31, 2024.”

In Netflix’ defence, the 3rd generation Apple TV is now over a decade old and other providers have dropped support for their apps. Even Apple itself classes the device as obsolete. The last bastion of hope for the second and third-generation models is the ability to beam content from an iPhone or iPad to a companion Apple TV device via AirPlay.

The second-gen model was sold from 2010 to 2012 and only managed 720p resolution before it was succeeded by the third-generation model. Neither of these had the App Store on board, but Netflix came as one of the pre-installed services.

If you’re the owner of the newer Apple TV HD that followed in 2015, or any of the 4K capable Apple TV models nothing will change, you’ll still be able to stream Netflix’s vast library of mostly mindrot until your heart is content.

The model is in stock online and comes in the attractive silver shade. However, there are hundreds of people currently viewing the product so it might be wise to act fast.

This is a particularly astonishing configuration for a laptop now under £700. The Windows 11 laptop offers 12th generation Intel Core i7 processor (10 Core) backed by the powerful Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 GPU, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD.

The 16-inch (WUXGA+) display comes with a 120Hz refresh range and a 1920 x 1080p resolution. There’s a 16:10 aspect ratio too. There’s plenty of ports, including Thunderbolt 4 with power delivery, 2 x USB 3.2 Type A, a 3.5mm Jack and HDMI 2.1. There’s also Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 6E for wireless connectivity.

This model was launched in early 2023, so it’s still a relatively young machine, although there are configurations rocking newer 13th generation Intel Core processors.

If you need some extra help to warm up your home over the harsh winter months, then this list of the best electric heaters could come in very handy indeed.

Electric heaters are versatile bits of kit: they can help add warmth to a room that already has a radiator, they can be used to heat just one room without having to turn the main heating on, plus they can be used anywhere there’s a plug, such as in an outbuilding.

With the cost of electricity at an all-time high, buying an electric heater may not sound like a great idea. A typical 1,800W heater, for example, may cost 61p an hour to run, which might sound terrifying. However, don’t let that necessarily put you off.

Electric heaters are generally fast at warming up a limited area, that is, putting out a lot of heat in a short space of time. This means they don’t have to be on for long to make a noticeable difference, and if you buy a heater with a thermostat then it will shut down once your room has reached the right temperature.

Don’t let the power rating put you off, either. As it’s easy to turn electricity into heat, all electric heaters are roughly as efficient as each other. The main difference between different powered models is how much heat they can put out at once: a high-power heater will warm a room faster than a lower-powered one, but their overall power usage will be similar.

That said, very low-power heaters are good for warming just yourself: making a cold working space more comfortable, for example. Also, you should buy a heater that’s big enough to warm your room, as every heater will tell you the maximum-sized room it will work in.

The downside to electric heaters is that the warmth they produce will be lost quickly (radiators cool down slowly, so rooms cool more slowly as a result), and they can struggle to fill up larger rooms. As such, they’re better suited for small to medium-sized rooms, or for use with existing heating.
